April 2017 President’s Message

I am writing this for Juanita as she is ill. We wish her a speedy recovery. Hope you will glean much information at our April program about TSA and their rules and regulations.

We will also be voting on the new slate of officers at the April coffee. If you would like to hold a chair ship or continue in your current position, please let the newly elected officers know.

We have many fun activities in which all may participate. Happy Hours in March was attended by 16 members and 2 spouses. All had a good time. The tour of Doctor Bronner’s Soap Factory, on April 19, promises to be informative and fun. Please sign up with Wilma.

The Holiday Luncheon committee is already hard at work on plans for the party. So start saving your money for the Holiday Party.

March 2017 President’s Message

Our entertainment at our February
Coffee was expected to be a few members of the Sunset Strummers
and their ukuleles. We chatted. as strummer after strummer after strummer set up their chairs. They were so enthusiastic and were having so much fun it was so infectious to all of us.
Our new member, Rita Sweeting, led us in singing Happy Birthday for our 27th birthday celebration. What a voice she has! We were amazed at her breath control on that last note. We had a beautiful birthday cake. A few pieces were left for the residents of Arcadia Place.
Bring your friends to coffee. We have some informative programs coming up. Don’t forget brunch bunch will meet at Pegahs in San Marcos in March. See the information inside.
See you in March,
Juanita

February President’s Message

Thanks to Trudy Snell for leading the business meeting at the coffee in January. I had a broken tooth that needed pulling. All’s well now. I had the list of ladies who supplied goodies (December Birthdays) with me at the dentist. Soooo, thanks to Mary Held, Anne Johnston, Sandy Stevens, and Doris Teich for supplying refreshments last month.

The nominating committee is working now. If you would like to help in the working of our group as a board member or chairman of a committee give a shout out, or a whisper to Trudy, our nominating committee chairperson. We need participation to keep our group going.

Let’s all stay healthy during this cold,, wet month. It didn’t take long for us to get tired of Southern California’ s winter weather did it.? We are so spoiled and lucky to live here. See you soon.

Juanita

December 2016 President’s Message

The big DECEMBER JANUARY newsletter is here. We have to figure out how to keep it for 2 months.

So…..
We can make extra copies and put them in several rooms. or
We can leave it on the computer and not erase it for 2 months. or

We can enter all activities on. a calendar that we carry with us. Good luck.

DON’T FORGET the HOLIDAY Luncheon on our regular Coffee day
Have a merry, merry Holiday and a happy happy new year.

Hope to see you at our events, Juanita

November 2016 President’s Message

We received a THANK You card from the residents of ARCADIA PLACE for the BINGO party we gave them. I will bring it to the next coffee. Those who participated enjoyed our efforts.

Welcome to our new member who have already joined in our extra activities. More information inside.

The Holiday Luncheon is coming up as fast as the rest of the year has already disappeared. It will be at the beautiful Vista Valley County Club on our regular meeting day. Hopefully we will get some cooler weather to make us more festive.

Marilyn Frietag will be having Game Day at her home every month. Find some time to play a game with friends.

We have a special event train trip to San Juan Capistrano at the end of the month. This is always an adventure. You can go by car if you wish. Lunch will be at a nearby restaurant. This should be fun.

Hope to see you at our events, Juanita

October 2016 President’s Message

When was the last time you heard the song. I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS? It was what the band played 90% of the time for the last dance in high school and college. It was the signal that it was time to go home..or at least the band was going to stop playing and the dance was ending

For the next few months I plan to go to the Lawrence Welk Resort on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:00 to enjoy CHAMPAGNE DIXIE play music you would remember in an upbeat style. We sit outside at tables or on couches on front of the theater. There is a bar, a pizza place and their chefs serve a good dinner for $10. Eating is not necessary. I have followed this band for several years and enjoy their music and watching the dancers on the much used dance floor. It can get cold in winter, so I dress warmly and casually. They cancel if it rains. Last year it rained a lot on Tuesdays. Anyway, they play I’ll see u in my dreams as their closing tune. My memory goes way back to old happy times.

Our Ice Cream Social was relaxing and tasty. Yes, it was social. Carla and helpers had a delicious idea. Thanks to the helpers with setting up and taking down, and scooping and providing cookies.

I used my new ENTERTAINMENT BOOK. The coupon appeared for an old favorite restaurant that hadn’t been in the book before. ENTERTAINMENT books are good to give family and friends as birthday or holiday gifts. Doris sold 10 books already.

We are sorry to report that Marilyn and Jim Groover are moving to southern Washington to live in a less urban setting. We are happy that they stopped in Vista for 6 years and joined our group. She will join a Newcomers group again, just as she found us when she left her previous club.

Our new blue membership roster is out. Help Karen Taylor by coming to meeting to get your copy.

Trudy, Toby, Marilyn F., and Mary Held, participated in thanking ARCADIA PLACE residents for offering us a meeting place for the last 25 years. We gave them cash winnings at BINGO. They had a good time, and we are happy to have a meeting place

September 2016 President’s Letter

Here we are at STITCH AND BITCH at Trudy’ s house. We‘re putting together dried beans and assorted other dried soup making ingredients.
Then we can follow her recipe and make soup. In my house, we will wait for cooler weather.
We went to the BELCHING BEAVER for LEO last month. It’s a new restaurant in Vista and very popular. We had two big tables.
Virginia Hueth arranged for a wine tasting at Brooking Winery in Vista I’m not a wine connoisseur . I don’t know one type from another, hardly, but this port was really special. Mr. Brooking won five gold medals at the SD County Fair one year (2014). I’ve never tasted anything like his award winning wine.
Entertainment Books are available very soon. We coupled up at the Jolly Roger for August LEO and used coupons.
Our coffee will be an ice cream social this month. We will just have a good time with each other. And our meeting. Expanding our friendships with members and guests will be good for all.
.Looking forward on our calendar we have some enjoyable outings planned. Book club members should look forward to a movle from one of our books. Talk with Sandy Stevens if you want to join in on the movie group.
We will be having a BINGO PARTY at Arcadia Place to show our appreciation to the residents for 25 years of letting us meet there.
HAPPY EVERYTHING, Juanita

August 2016 President’s Message

Did you notice we had four new guests last coffee? Wilma had the Tribune print an Invitation and we had good responses. (also a couple of resident men who left after they got their cookies) Hey, your dues are paid, now come and join in our activities. We haven’t seen some of you lately. Yes, we know it’s time for visiting families and far away places. We will be holding a BINGO PARTY for the residents of ARCADIA PLACE on Monday, SEPTEMBER 19th. This will be a thank you to the residents for letting us use their facility for our meetings. We will be giving cash to the winners, so we want enough Newcomers to help it go smoothly. We do appreciate the use of their room. Please lets have some volunteers. You do not nee.d to be on the board, or a chairperson to be of help. Judy, the new social director of Arcadia Place, gave us a warning that they have their own way of playing BINGO. We will have to find out about this. She will advise us, but it was a warning. Could someone make up a flyer to hand out to the residents? It will be a festive occasion , as we have not interacted much with the people who live there recently. Please volunteer to help with this special day. Let Juanita know you can help make our gratitude known.

Happy Summer, Juanita

July 2016 President’s Message

I’ve been thinking it’s too hot to ———. Evidently it was too hot to cook the night we had a huge

group for our LETS EAT OUT group. It was good to see lots of husbands joining the

ladies. They talk almost as much as the ladies. We should do something to encourage couples to participate with us. What could we do? It’s been years since we did the Harbor Dinner Cruise.

It was good to see seldom seen faces at the installation luncheon. We filled the room even though several of our regulars were on vacation. Thanks to the phone committee for reminding us of the luncheon and its dues time. If you bring in 2 new members to our If you bring in 2 new members to our group, you will get your dues refunded. (just a reminder.

We were sorry to have Jill Landon leave us to return to Scottsdale. She spent a year on our board.

It would have been good business to have the Kleenex concession at the June movie. What will we see next time? Looking forward to lunch after the movie. The theatre wanted us to have lunch first in June,as they just had an afternoon showing for us.

Book club attendees had best start reading “HAMILTON”. our September book. It’s the longest book we have ever scheduled. This is just a hint. Reading from a Kindle is lighter weight, but just as long.

June 2016 President’s Message

It’s time to thank all the worker bees who have volunteered this year to make our FRIENDS and Newcomers group work smoothly. We sometimes don’t even notice our workers in action. Our chairpersons and officers deserve a round of applause.

We had our appreciation tea at our May coffee for the good participation from members put on by the board. We really do a good job in making our meetings happy occasions when working together.

Get your reservations in for the INSTALLATION LUNCHEON at the HUNTER RESTAURANT in Oceanside on our regular meeting day in June. We will each pay for our meal at the restaurant that day. Put your order in from the selection in the newsletter . (see page 5)
This will save a lot of paperwork in the planning. We will have a private room and good food at a reasonable price.

Dues are due this month, as well for those who haven’t paid yet. Lets all get them paid so we can get the yearbook out on time. We have a contest going to get new members. Bring two new members into the club and get your membership paid for the year.

We have a new lunch group meeting at members homes. I think they’re going to be looking for people to substitute whenever the regular members can’t make it. Call Bunny Hallstrom for more information. Sandy Stevens is starting a movie going group, also. If you have an idea or a wish for companions to do something with you, lets find you others with similar interests. I heard an idea that we could go out of town for a day or two. Where could we go? What could we do?

With Summer coming on, members have already started traveling. Show up for things when you are in town so we don’t have too many empty spaces. We will miss you if you’re not around. But, we know you are just gathering stories to tell us when you get back. See you at the INSTALLATION LUNCHEON.
